EMDR Therapy: Work with an Experienced EMDR Therapist in California
Healing with Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
EMDR is an alternative to traditional talk therapy that has been scientifically proven to help individuals process and heal from painful memories, reduce anxiety and depression, facilitate grief and regain a sense of emotional balance and safety.
Whether you feel in stuck past, have experienced a recent traumatic event or crisis or have a desire to overcome deep self-limiting negative beliefs and unhelpful patterns, at Cove Counseling Group we have highly trained EMDR therapists in California ready to help you with your healing.
Who can benefit from EMDR?
While EMDR was originally developed to help those who have experienced trauma or a diagnosis of PTSD , it can also benefit others!
EMDR can help individuals struggling with anxiety, low self-esteem, depression, intrusive thoughts and self-limiting beliefs and challenges in their relationships.
EMDR as Self-Esteem Therapy
Many of the negative beliefs we hold about ourselves—like “I’m not good enough,” “I’m unlovable,” or “I always mess things up”—are rooted in earlier life experiences that were maladaptively stored in the brain. While these memories may not seem significant on the surface, they carry emotional weight that continues to impact how we see and feel about ourselves.
Through guided eye movements or other modes of bilateral stimulation, EMDR helps identify and reprocess these painful memories that are keeping you feeling stuck. By targeting the root of these negative self-beliefs, EMDR allows the brain to integrate more adaptive, compassionate information and perspectives—like “I did the best I could,” or “I am worthy of love and respect.”
This process can lead to powerful shifts and improvement in self-esteem, self-worth, and how you show up in relationships and daily life. You're not just learning to “think more positively”—you're changing how your nervous system functions and responds to triggers or stressors.
Backed by Research and Trusted Internationally
EMDR therapy isn’t just popular—it’s a proven approach that’s supported by years of research and trusted by mental leading global organizations.
The American Psychological Association (APA) recommends EMDR as a frontline treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
The World Health Organization (WHO) also endorses EMDR as one of the most effective therapies for trauma and distressing life experiences.
Why does that matter? It means EMDR isn’t just a trend—it’s a clinically supported, evidence-based approach that helps people safely process trauma, reduce symptoms, and feel more emotionally regulated.
At Cove Counseling Group, we use EMDR because it works. Our therapists are trained in this effective approach and use it alongside a trauma-informed, supportive style that helps you feel safe while doing the deeper healing work.
How does EMDR therapy work?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing helps to reprocess and clear distressing memories by stimulating both sides of the brain including rapid eye movement (bilateral stimulation).
Bilateral stimulation reduces the emotional charge of these memories, allowing for healthier emotional responses and beliefs.
EMDR therapy helps you to process and heal from past experiences in a way that doesn’t require reliving them in detail.
Many clients find EMDR to be transformative, helping them overcome long-standing issues and move forward with greater peace and resilience.
Key benefits: short-term treatment, non-invasive, research backed approach

What to expect in an EMDR therapy session
Eye Movement Desensitization (EMDR) follows an eight-phase protocol.
The first three phases involves your therapist getting to know you and gathering relevant history, identifying goals and developing an individualized treatment plan and preparing you for desensitization and reprocessing.
In phases 4-8 you will participate in the desensitization and reprocessing of the target memories you identified in the earlier phases through bilateral stimulation.
Different methods of bilateral stimulation include eye movements, tactile stimulation and auditory stimulation.
